Thompson, Robert P. “Robbie” - 1970
A graduate of the University of Georgia, Thompson worked with his father in the coal and wood business. During his time off, he worked with John Varnedoe at Savannah High School as coach of the junior varsity football team and was a great developer of football talent. Some of these players included Charles Woods, Red Pearson, Sonny Bragg, L.C. McLendon, and many others.
In addition to football, Thompson became the head coach of the Savannah High boxing team. Some of his most notable players include Joe Dinerman, Albert Moreno, Harry Kemp, “Pop” Templeton, and Charles Lefitte. Later, he became head football coach at Benedictine Military Academy, a rival of Savannah High. Thompson was a fine coach and very popular, well-liked man.
