Saunders, Bill J. - 1983
Although the numbers alone tell the story on Bill Saunders, his accomplishments are more than mere titles and victories. Saunders faithfully dedicated twenty five years of service to the coaching profession at Savannah Country Day School.
During his time at the school, his football teams won 170 games and lost only 61. Saunders coached four recipients of the prestigious Dearing Award, given to the most versatile athlete in the city. His football clubs won a state championship, finished runner-up in the state, and took seven region titles and four area championships during his stay.
Saunders has been named Savannah Coach of the Year four times and Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year once. He also served as coach of the South All-Star team in 1981. In recognition of Saunders’ service as coach, business manager, and athletic director, Savannah Country Day School’s new football stadium was named Saunders Field in his honor.
