Peters, Sr., John A. - 1978
Peters was a lifelong contributor to sports in Savannah, his native city. A successful businessman, he backed principally the sports programs of Benedictine Military School and Armstrong State College. He also sponsored numerous pee-wee teams in the recreation leagues.
In post-World War I days, he and his friend John “Red” Fogarty bought the Savannah professional baseball franchises in order to keep them in the community. These teams play in the South Atlantic League to this day. Peters was also known for his philanthropy in many fields other than sports. The Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame accorded him a special citation in 1978.
