Holland, Marcus - 2001

Marcus Holland has been in the Savannah newspaper business for fifty years. He began working full-time in the sports department in 1955 and was named sports editor of the Savannah News-Pres in 1976. He covered all sports from Little League to the professional level, and has served as official scorer for the Savannah professional baseball teams in the South Atlantic League for the past thirty-two years. Holland was instrumental in keeping baseball in Savannah when the Savannah Indians team moved out in 1970. As sports editor, he started the News-Press All-City high school football team in 1968. Holland has also coached Little League baseball, football, and basketball. As a member of the Savannah Umpiring Association, he umpired for ten years. An outstanding bowler, Holland served as an official in the Savannah Bowling Association for over twenty years. He served two and a half terms as president in the association as well. In addition, Holland has served two terms as president o the Windsor Forest High School’s Athletic Boosters Club.
