Garis, G. Fred - 1969

Involved more than fifty years in youth work in Savannah, Garis served as sports director of the YMCA, founded and coached the Tiger Athletic Club in all sports, helped uplift the sport of bowling to a place of prominence, served as an official in all sports, and was a founder of the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame. He served many terms as Chairman of the Hall of Fame’s Honors Court. He played collegiate athletics for Roanoke College and is a charter member of that institution’s Athletic Hall of Fame, cited for achievement in basketball, football, and baseball. A historian and preservationist, he was honored in 1973 by the Savannah Museum Association for his work in recording and preserving Savannah’s heritage.
