Coffey, Tom - 1992
Tom Coffey, a longtime sportswriter and editor at the Savannah Morning News-Press, was an activist in the community during his 49-year newspaper career. Coffey’s efforts were instrumental in getting Memorial Stadium constructed and he helped institute Little League baseball into Savannah athletics. In addition, Coffey led a newspaper campaign in 1959 to prevent a budget crisis from eliminating varsity athletics in the public schools.
He has supported and espoused improvement of local sports and recreational facilities throughout his career and has been a trustee of the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame since 1968.
