Campbell, Walter - 1966
An athlete, coach, sportswriter and baseball executive, Campbell is a character honoree of the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame. Before coming to Savannah in 1935, he was a YMCA youth leader and sportswriter in his native Waycross. Here, as a sports editor of the Savannah Evening Press and later of the Savannah Morning News, his humanistic coverage of athletic events provided inspiration to young players. Campbell also served as general manager of the professional Savannah Basketball Club and became vice president of the South Atlantic Baseball League. Many in sports came under his tutelage and benefited from his wisdom and council. An editorial tribute in the Morning News upon his death described Campbell’s attitude as one exemplifying the ideals of sports.
