Young, Jon - Track, 1983
Young is one of the finest sprinters Savannah has ever produced, earning All-American honors eight times in an athletic career that spanned eight and a half years. Young’s ability first came to light at Beach High School under Carl Middleton, where he won state titles in the 100- and 200-yard dashes his senior year. After high school, Young joined the Air Force and soon was running competitively for service teams. He earned three All-American Athletic Union All-American honors and was ranked sixth in the U.S. at one time. Four and a half years later, he was discharged from the Air Force and enrolled at the University of Tennessee in 1973. During his four year career at the University of Tennessee, Young earned All-American honors five times and still holds the school record in the 60-yard dash (5.95 seconds). He was captain of the UT track team his junior and senior years and ran on a 440-relay team that held the world record for two years with a clocking of 39.16 seconds.
