Whalen, William F. - Basketball, 1983

Whalen’s remarkable career started at Benedictine Military School, where he played varsity basketball from 1933-34. From 1935-40, Whalen played basketball with the Medical Detachment, 117th Field Artillery’s team, the famed “Medicos.” During his years of competition, the Medicos won the city title five times. The team also competed against touring professional teams like the Celtics, Olsen’s Red Head, and the House of David. Whalen also played as the third baseman for the Savannah Ice Delivery Team, one of the city’s top softball teams, for six years. Four of those six years (1946-49), his team was City League Champions. He was enshrined in the Savannah Softball Hall of Fame in 1991, its inaugural year.
