Werntz, Jr., Edward J. “Eddie” - Football, 2002
Werntz was a quarterback at Benedictine Military School and played a pivotal role in securing the school’s first region championship in 1957. That same year, he was appointed to the All-City team and the South All-Star team. After his prep career, Werntz attended Clemson University where he became an outstanding punter. He was ranked No. 2 in the ACC in 1960; and in 1961, he ranked No. 1 in the ACC and No. 8 in the NCAA. That same year, Werntz set the individual game record against Florida at 45.4 yards. His best individual game record was against Tulane University at 47.3 yards. In 1962, Werntz was selected in a Clemson fans poll to the All-Time Clemson Football Team. His punting ability was Clemson’s secret weapon.
