Simmons, Roy - Football, 1990
Roy Simmons was an outstanding athlete on the Beach High School football team under Coach Russell Ellington. Possessing the size of a lineman and the speed of a sprinter, he played tackle on offense and moved along the line in defensive play. His senior year, he was selected the All-State Football Tackle and was rated in the top 25 best college prospects. Simmons also competed in high school track events. He timed at 10.1 seconds in the 100-yard dash and ran a leg on the 440-yard relay team. After high school, Simmons accepted a scholarship from Georgia Tech. He emerged as a regular offensive tackle in the latter part of his freshman year and continued to solidly perform in the position throughout his stay at Tech, earning him recognition as a sure pro candidate. The New York Giants of the National Football League drafted Simmons in the eighth round. He was a regular offensive tackle on the team for two years before being traded to the Washington Redskins. He retired with this team after experiencing complications due to injuries.
