Mell, Charlie - Softball, 1995

Mell is one of the city’s all-time softball players and coaches. He played center field and shortstop positions for the Savannah Ice Company team; and has won so many city championships that he has lost count. Despite his claims of being a better player than a coach, Mell’s greatest accomplishments came in the dugout, not on the field. In 1964, he coached the Pabst Blue Ribbon Team all the way to the World Championship game, only to have two late errors let the title slip away. Mell helped shape the growth and popularity of softball in Savannah for over 30 years. During the sport’s most popular days, he was viewed as the city’s best player. When the Savannah Softball Hall of Fame erected a monument at Paulson complex, his name was among the first inscribed in the inaugural class of the local organization.
