Mathews, Joseph C. “Dedi” - Boxing, 1970

Mathews was an outstanding amateur boxer. He won two Southeastern Golden Gloves titles and twice reached the National finals in New York. During his career, he fought for Savannah High School, CYPA, Union Bag, Great Dane, Fort Screven, and the U.S. Navy. In 1942, he was rated “Prospect of the Month” by Ring Magazine. When Mathews’ career drew to a close, he held a record of 97-4-1, with over 50 knockouts.
