Marcus, Dick “Leonard” - Boxing, 1967

Marcus, who fought under the alias of Dick Leonard, was a Southern Lightweight Boxing Champion. He was a contemporary of Young Stribling, meeting four times in 1921 alone. Marcus lost only 9 of 170 bouts as a professional boxer and retired from the ring in 1930 as vision in one of his eyes weakened. After his boxing career, he trained and encouraged a number of top-flight local fighters from the Union Camp, Jewish Education Alliance, and Savannah High School teams for a number of years.
