Holmes, Johnny Lee - Football, 2006
Holmes was a four-year letterman at Tompkins High School under Coach Joseph Turner. Leading on defense, he helped his team to win the City Championship in 1959. In 1960, they won the city, region, and state titles. Holmes was chosen All-City in 1960-61 and Lineman of the Year in 1961. After graduation, Holmes earned a four-year scholarship to Florida A&M University under Coach Jack Gaither. His outstanding playing earned him Lineman of the Year in 1964-65 and an appointment to play in the Blue-Gray Football Classic in 1965. Holmes was a high draft choice of the Detroit Lions of the National Football League, but he opted to sign with the Miami Dolphins of the American Football League instead. He later played for the Orlando Panthers of the Continental Football League before retiring from professional football play.
