Dillion, John “Hook” - Basketball, 1967

A two-time All-American at the University of North Carolina in the mid-1940s, Dillon gained his nickname from the basketball shot he made famous by piling up points with a sweeping over-the-head hook shot with either hand. His greatest moments came in the 1945 Christmas Holiday Tournaments in New York’s Madison Square Garden, when he averaged 17 points per game in four contests and won the acclaim of fans and the New York press. Dillon played professional ball with the old Washington Capitols of the National Basketball League’s Eastern Division. A native Savannahian, he got his start in basketball at Benedictine Military School, where he also played football.
