Center, Leo C. - Boxing, 1971
Leo Center lettered in basketball at Savannah High School in 1936 and in football and basketball at Miami Military Academy the following year.
In 1939, Center launched his boxing career as a member of the Union Bag team and fought for three years, when Navy order put an end to a promising pugilistic future. During his brief stint at boxing, Center won several Golden Gloves titles, a city championship, and advanced to the National Golden Glove finals in New York before turning pro in 1951. He also won a fleet championship while in the Navy during World War II. After returning to Savannah, Center became a city alderman.
