Deal, Harry - 1987

Harry Deal is one of the most successful coaches in the history of the city and his record as a parochial league coach remains unsurpassed. Deal diligently coached several sports and met each with great success. In football, his teams at Cathedral Day School won nine league championships from 1949-1959. In girl’s basketball, Deal’s clubs won four league titles. In addition to that heavy load, Deal also found time to coach the track team for first place finishes from 1950-52.
In what spare time he had, Deal served as a trainer at Benedictine, and in 1969 he became coach of their junior varsity team. From 1969 to 1979, Deal’s teams won 11 city titles, including an 8-0 year in 1974.
Deal also produced city champions in women’s softball in 1960-64, and guided teams to state titles in 1980 and 1982. In 1967, he coached the undefeated South Carolina semi-pro football team and was named Coach of the Year for the South Carolina Semi-Pro Football League.
