Luten, Horace B. - Football, 2001

Luten was one of the best athletes to play at Sol C. Johnson High School. He played quarterback from 1965-67, throwing 22 touchdown passes in 1966 and leading his team to an undefeated season his senior year. Luten won the Coca Cola Bottling Company’s “Most Valuable Player Award” for the city. He also excelled in track. In 1976, he ran the 440-relay, the 180-yard low hurdles, 120-yard high hurdles. Luten played football and Norfolk State University in Virginia from 1967-72. He started at split end in 1969-71 and ran back punts and kickoffs. He was the holder for extra points and field goals. He is credited with making the longest punt return of 85 yards in 1969 against North Carolina A&T. After his collegiate career, Luten has remained active as a volunteer coach with the City of Savannah’s Youth Football League. In 1999, he was voted “Coach of the Year” by his team: the Cobras.
