Lantz, Jr., Rick - Football, 1985
Lantz was a three-sport standout at Jenkins High School in the late 1960s under Coach Bubba Attwood and Coach Turp Spear. He made his greatest mark in football as a three-time member of the News-Press All-City football team and earning the honor of Lineman of the Year in 1968.Spring of his senior year, Lantz was involved in a horrendous car wreck and was severely injured. Despite doubts from physicians that he’d be able to compete again, Lantz enrolled in Georgia Tech and was given a varsity starting position his freshman year. However, midway through his freshman season, he was once again injured in a game. The injury required Lantz to have surgery on both knees and his recovery proved a difficult one.Still, Lantz bounced back to become one of Georgia Tech’s all-time great offensive lineman. He was name to the All-South Independent team three consecutive years (1970-72) and was co-captain of the team in 1972. Lantz was later named to Tech’s All-Era team and played in four bowl games: the Citrus Bowl (1969), Sun Bowl (1970), Peach Bowl (1971), and Liberty Bowl (1972).
