Elliott, Gary - Basketball, 1995

Gary Elliott played basketball in the early 1960s when games were played at the Savannah Civic Center among near-capacity crowds. Elliott was named Jenkins’ Player of the Year as a senior, averaging 22.2 points per game. His performance earned him a spot on the AAA All-State team and honorable mention of All-American honors by Coach and Athlete magazine.Elliott played one year at Middle Georgia College. He was the teams leading scorer, made the Region 8 All-Star team, and was named Junior College Player of the Year. The following year, he accepted a basketball scholarship to the University of Alabama.His senior season, Elliott captained the Crimson tide, leading the team with 18.1 points per game. He earned All-SEC honors from the United Press International and the Associated Press. Elliott’s years of collegiate play instilled in him a desire to assume coaching as a profession. After graduation, he took a position at the University of North Alabama in Florence, Alabama.
