Smiley, Julian - Football, 2006

Julian Smiley played football at Savannah High School from 1964-67. He was the Savannah News-Press All-City Quarterback (1965-66), winner of the Dearing Trophy (1967), and was the Associated Press Georgia High School Back of the Week his senior season for rushing 318 yards against Richmond Academy in Augusta, Georgia. Smiley was also appointed to All-City, All-State, All- Southern, and High School All-American honors. Julian signed with the University of Georgia and averaged 5.3 yards per carry his freshman season. In 1969, he played fullback and led the varsity in rushing with 481 yards on 124 carries and 4 touchdowns. That same year, he also led the team in kick-off returns with an average of 23.9 yards on 16 returns. Unfortunately, Smiley suffered an injury in his senior season. Before being forced to retire from play, he accumulated 128 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 29 yards and one touchdown.
