Sarah Wade - Coach for Deaf Athletes, 1981

Miss Wade captained Savannah High School’s basketball team from 1946-55, and then continued her career at Georgia School for the Deaf in Cave Springs. A graduate of the University of Georgia, she taught deaf children of all ages and coached swimming, softball, track, basketball, and cheerleaders at the school. In 1977, she was selected as one of the coaches for the USA girl’s track team in the Deaf Olympic Games, held in Bucharest, Romania. Two years later, Miss Wade was selected Coach of the Year by “The Deaf American”, a publication of the National Association of the Deaf. The magazine cited her for coaching the Georgia School for the Deaf’s girls to a region championship “with industry and dedication.”
